SAUSAGE

Sausages are a meat product made from minced meat, chicken, pork, beef, or poultry, along with salt, spices and other flavourings. Sausage is a versatile family favourite with great taste and doesn’t take time to prepare. Making a quick and easy breakfast, sausage is one of the food ingredients that can be added and also accompanied with bread, pasta, noddles, sandwich, or snacks etc. They are garnished with various spices and served with different sauces and condiments depending on the region. Sausages are delicious and tastes especially delicious alongside other breakfast foods like bread and eggs. It can also be grilled, steamed, broiled or cooked and can be eaten by itself or as an ingredient in many dishes.

The different methods of processing sausage includes;

FRESH UNCOOKED SAUSAGE

This is a fresh sausage that is prepared raw, without cooking, curing or ripening. Raw sausages are uncooked sausages that are devoured without any heating or traditional cooking and also eaten with other food menu. An example of these sausages are the two parts minced and mixed in with salt and paprika and black pepper, cayenne pepper and other seasoning.

SMOKED UNCOOKED SAUSAGE 

This is a sausage prepared by cooking, smoking, fermentation mixed with some spicy and flavoured spice and herbs. Some varieties of smoked sausage are uncooked like Polish sausage and then there are varieties that are fully cooked like Kielbasa.

COOKED SAUSAGE

Cooked sausages refer to all types of sausages that are heated in some manner. The cooked sausage can be prepared by cooking, baking, frying and smoking with some spice and herbs to give it that flavoured taste.

TYPES OF SAUSAGE

The different types of sausage includes;

  1. Chicken sausage
  2. Pork sausage
  3. Beef sausage
  4. Mixed pork and beef sausage
  5. Blood sausages

CHICKEN SAUSAGES

Chicken sausage are prepared using different types of chickens and are much softer in texture but much more sumptuous in taste than the normal pork or liver sausages.

PORK SAUSAGES

Pork sausages are made from ground pig’s meat, but sometimes they are even prepared using pork intestines and it’s preparation is done in a natural way. They both have a deep red color and are both seasoned with smoked, dried, red peppers.

BEEF SAUSAGES

Beef sausages are prepared with minced meat or with ground beef meat with seasoning like paprika, spicy chilli, salt and other spices and herbs. It can be serve  fried or grilled with potatoes chips or baked beans, or incorporated into noddles.

MIXED BEEF AND PORK SAUSAGES 

The mixed beef and pork sausages are prepared solely from both ground beef and pork mixed together , seasoned with nutmeg and mustard seeds as well as other spices and herbs. It can be best enjoyed as barbecue with other proteins and corn with a splash chilly pepper and seasoning.

BLOOD SAUSAGES

Blood sausages are sausages prepared from dried and cooked animal blood or blood puddings that’s solidifies into a roll. The animals whose blood is used can be pigs, cows, sheep, goats, or ducks.

IS SAUSAGE GOOD FOR YOU

Sausages are really good when you can control the nutritional content, reduce the salt content, using lean meats like chicken, turkey or even tofu can reduce the fat content of each sausage. Sausages contain several grams of complete protein per serving, and each provides all nine amino acids you need in your diet. Sausages have no sugar or carbohydrates, they make a good choice for a person with Diabetes or other health restrictions. Sausages provide vitamin B-12, a nutrient important for healthy red blood cells. If you are on a diet, all you need do is eat sausage in moderation, incorporate more vegetables with sausages avoid eating fatty and fried sausages to as not to raise your blood cholesterol level.
